Throughout his career, pianist-composer Bill Evans successfully melded Bud Powell's fiery bop-paced technique with the lyricism and harmonic language of the French impressionists Ravel and Debussy. So it was only natural that he would record a session that combines the jazz and classical traditions.Released in 1965, this date features Evans's trio with drummer Larry Bunker, who, three decades later, guest-starred on Diana Krall's When I Look in Your Eyes, and the sensitive bassist Larry Bunker. They're augmented by the azure-tinged arrangements by the famed conductor Claus Ogerman, who worked his magic with artists from Antonio Carlos Jobim to Frank Sinatra. The result of this union is a swinging and seamless interplay in which improvisation becomes spontaneous composition, and vice versa. The linearity and logic of Evans's lines erase centuries of musical distance from the works of Bach, Chopin, Granados, Fauré, and Scriabin, with the trio's trademark telepathy expressed in 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures and light Latin tinges. Evans's haunting compositions, "My Bells" and "Time Remembered," imbued by Ogerman's ethereal strings, are the jewels of this delightful recording, whose brilliance has increased with time. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Marin Alsop and the London Philharmonic continue their foray into the Brahms symphonies with what some people feel is the Master's greatest work--certainly the one filled with his most poetic utterances. It is impossible not to be enchanted by the abundance of folk-like, the easy melodies in the first movement, or the pastoral wind opening of the second--here played so naturally and warmly under Alsop that it sounds like speech. The sad little melody of the third movement is not lingered over, and the waltz seems to come from a faraway place (with stunning horn playing); the finale triumphant and energetic, with quite a storm at its center and a true build-up of tension racing toward the finish. The LPO is superb, the winds, in particular, playing as if Dvorak has coached them. The Haydn Variations are given a colorful, flavorful performance, with the brass spectacular in both their restraint and lack thereof when called for. This is a stunning release: a must-have. --Robert Levine

This is an extremely welcome release for fans of Michael Tilson Thomas: the first CD appearance of a legendary recording with the Boston Symphony he made (as its new assistant conductor) in March 1970. At that point (still only in his mid-20s), Tilson Thomas was becoming notorious for introducing provocative new music by the likes of Steve Reich, but he was also stirring up a rather moribund classical music scene. Just imagine the ethos in those days, when talk of the demise of the symphony orchestra as an absurd irrelevance was gloomier even than it is now: in rushed MTT with a super-infusion of excitement and confidence to rouse the players--and the audience. MTT was already proving his deep affinity with Russian composers (which would be followed many years later by his enormously successful accounts of Prokofiev and Stravinsky). This is, in fact, one of the finest readings on record of Tchaikovsky's First Symphony (subtitled, with greater programmatic élan than usual, Winter Dreams), lushly expansive in its reveries (the veiled beauty of the slow movement as it unfolds its mournful folk song) but also crisp and pointed, dramatically tense, and featuring sinewy balances of wind, brass, and strings. The Tchaikovsky is worth the price of purchase itself, but the CD also includes a bracing vision of Debussy's Images. MTT's view of this sonic triptych shows a rhythmic vigor that will overturn stereotypes of vague, amorphous "impressionism" (a labeling Debussy, of course, always detested). At midprice, this is a must-have for your collection. --Thomas May
