| This is the second of Herbert von Karajan's three versions of this symphony for Deutsche Grammophon, and it's a very nice one. Karajan always did well by the orchestral portions of this symphony, playing them sort of like proto-Bruckner. In the finale, as in his 1963 recording, he seems to prefer a very light, backward-balanced choral sound that will not appeal to those who believe that Beethoven meant the words to be heard. That reservation aside, this performance can be recommended as typical of Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in top form. --David Hurwitz

| Time has somewhat tarnished these once highly regarded recordings. EMI's early stereo engineering was hit and miss, and not even these new remasterings can fully tame the strident string tone and hollow-sounding tuttis. Yet the performances have many virtues, including rhythmic élan, well-chosen tempos, and winsomely characterized solo playing. Above all else is Beecham's flair for shaping and projecting melodies with a cute little accent here, a dynamic surge there, and enough felicitous turns of phrase to keep the listener smiling. It's true that other conductors have elicited leaner, tauter ensemble work from their musicians (Carlos Kleiber's Third with the Vienna Philharmonic, for instance, and Fritz Reiner's neatly regimented Fifth with the Chicago Symphony). However, if you desire this uplifting group of works on one well-filled disc (and who wouldn't?), Beecham has the field to himself. --Jed Distler

| Heroes was composed in 1996 as a set of ballet pieces for Twyla Tharp; each of the six movements was based on tunes by David Bowie and Brian Eno. Even outside of their obvious dance purposes, listeners will have plenty to keep them interested, since Glass's scoring for these pieces is colorful and ear-catching. Horns play a big part in the opening section; "Abdulmajid," has an Arabic tinge, featuring castanets and celesta; the heavy brass that opens "Sense of Doubt" gives way to some fine woodwind play, and so forth. Much of the work is in the familiar Glass style of repeated arpeggiated phrases, but the textures change constantly. The Light, from 1987, is supposedly a depiction of a scientific experiment confirming the speed of light, but the listener need not be concerned. It starts with a lovely if downhearted theme but picks up steam in a manner that may remind you of the composer's The Photographer, eventually reaching an almost tipsy level of frenzy. The performances by Marin Alsop and The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are ideal. --Robert Levine

| Stravinsky was seldom the best conductor of his own music, but this disc of his three symphonies is an exception. In the first place, none of them are all that difficult to conduct--at least compared to some of his earlier works--and he seems to have been in particularly good form throughout these recording sessions. He gets a particularly enthusiastic response from his Canadian forces in the Symphony of Psalms--one of this century's great choral masterworks, and seems to really enjoy the neo-classical elegance of the Symphony in C. Of all of the individual releases from Sony's complete Stravinsky edition, this one has pride of place. --David Hurwitz
